Safeguarding

Safeguarding at Bowsland Green

At Bowsland Green Primary School, the safety, wellbeing and happiness of every child are at the heart of everything we do. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. We work together with children, families and other professionals to make sure that children feel safe, listened to and supported. All members of staff receive regular safeguarding training and understand their responsibility to recognise concerns, respond appropriately and share information when necessary. Our aim is simple: every child should feel safe, know who they can talk to and have confidence that adults will listen and help.

Worried about a child?

If you are worried about the safety or wellbeing of a child, please tell us. You do not need to be certain that something is wrong before sharing a concern. Sometimes one small piece of information can help us understand a much bigger picture. Please contact the school and ask to speak to a member of our Designated Safeguarding Team.

Immediate danger?

If you believe that a child or young person is in immediate danger or at immediate risk of serious harm, call: 999
You do not need to contact the school first.

If you need to contact the police about a concern that is not an emergency, call 101.

Reporting concerns during the school day

If you have a safeguarding concern during the school day, please contact us as soon as possible and ask to speak to a member of the Designated Safeguarding Team.

You can:

Please never worry that a concern is too small to mention. If something does not feel right, we would always rather you shared it with us. If a child tells you something that causes you concern, listen carefully and calmly. Reassure them that they have done the right thing by speaking to you, but do not promise to keep the information secret. Please share the concern with the school safeguarding team as soon as possible.

At Bowsland Green, we encourage children to Be Brave and speak to a trusted adult if something is worrying them.

Concerns when school is closed

Safeguarding concerns should not wait until the school reopens if you believe a child may be at risk.

If you are concerned about a child outside school hours, you can contact South Gloucestershire Children’s Social Care directly.

South Gloucestershire Safeguarding

South Gloucestershire Council provides advice and support for anyone concerned about a child or young person.

The Access and Response Team (ART) receives safeguarding referrals and works with families and professionals to decide what support or protection a child may need.

We encourage parents and carers to contact the service directly if they believe a child may be experiencing abuse, neglect or another safeguarding risk.

Online Safety

Technology plays an important part in children’s lives and education. At Bowsland Green, we want our children to enjoy the opportunities that technology provides while developing the knowledge and confidence to keep themselves safe.

Online safety is taught throughout our curriculum.

We regularly remind children that the same expectations for kindness and respect apply online as they do in school.

If something happens online that worries your child, encourage them to Be Brave and tell a trusted adult.

Parents and carers are also encouraged to contact the school if they would like advice or are concerned about something their child has experienced online.

Prevent

Bowsland Green Primary School recognises its responsibilities under the Prevent duty.

Prevent forms part of our wider safeguarding responsibilities and is concerned with protecting children from the risk of radicalisation and extremism.

Staff receive appropriate training and understand how to recognise and respond to concerns about possible radicalisation.

Any concern is considered carefully, sensitively and in the context of the individual child.

Child-on-child abuse

Every child has the right to feel safe at school.

We recognise that children can sometimes harm other children and that child-on-child abuse can take different forms.

At Bowsland Green, abusive or harmful behaviour will never be dismissed as “banter”, “just having a laugh” or simply part of growing up.

We encourage children to Be Brave and tell someone whenever another person’s actions make them feel frightened, uncomfortable or unsafe.

We also teach children to Be Kind, respect personal boundaries and understand that everyone’s feelings and experiences matter.

Staff take concerns seriously and respond in line with our safeguarding procedures.

Our Safeguarding Curriculum

Safeguarding is not taught through one lesson or one subject. It is woven throughout life at Bowsland Green. Our Safeguarding Curriculum helps children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to recognise risks, make safe choices, build healthy relationships and seek help when they need it.

Children learn about safeguarding through:

  • PSHE and Relationships Education
  • Computing and Online Safety
  • Assemblies.

Learning is carefully adapted so that it is appropriate to children’s age, stage of development and individual needs.

We want every child at Bowsland Green to remember:

  • Be Brave– Tell someone when something doesn’t feel right.
  • Be Kind -Respect yourself and other people.
  • Be Proud – Be proud of making safe and positive choices.
  • Be Part of a Team – We keep one another safe by looking out for each other.

Most importantly:

You have the right to feel safe. You can always tell someone. There are adults at Bowsland Green who will listen to you.
