Year 5

Welcome to Ash Class

Year 5 is an exciting and important stage of the children’s journey through Key Stage Two. It is a year in which they develop greater independence, take increased responsibility for their learning and prepare for the opportunities and expectations of their final years at primary school.

Our classroom is a positive and ambitious place where children are encouraged to think deeply, ask thoughtful questions and approach new challenges with confidence. We want every child to recognise their strengths, learn from mistakes and understand that sustained effort leads to genuine improvement.

Throughout the year, children explore an increasingly varied range of texts and develop their ability to read fluently, discuss ideas and interpret meaning. They learn to plan, draft and refine their writing for different audiences and purposes. In maths, children deepen their understanding of number, calculation, fractions, decimals and percentages while applying their knowledge through reasoning and problem-solving.

Our wider curriculum provides opportunities for children to investigate, debate, create and make connections. Through science, history, geography, computing, art and other subjects, children deepen their knowledge of the world and learn to communicate their ideas clearly.

As some of the older pupils in the school, the children are encouraged to be positive role models. They have opportunities to take on responsibilities, contribute to school life and demonstrate the attitudes and behaviours expected across Bowsland Green.

Families can support learning by encouraging regular reading, discussing books and unfamiliar vocabulary, and helping children practise multiplication facts, spellings and other learning shared by the class teacher.
